Soile Yli‑Mäyry – Broken Hands Exhibition

Massive glass sculptures by Soile Yli‑Mäyry, recipient of the Pro Finlandia Medal and Doctor of Social Sciences, will be exhibited in Helsinki for the first time.

Artist Soile Yli‑Mäyry brings a remarkable exhibition of solid glass sculptures to the Finlandia Hall Showroom. The sculptures are created in collaboration with a master glassmaker and her team at the Berengo Studio in Murano, Venice, Italy. The exhibition features an extensive collection of works, including glass totems rising over two metres in height.

The exhibition also includes paintings by the artist, many of which served as the inspiration and starting point for the subjects and forms of the glass sculptures.

SOILE YLI‑MÄYRY, a visual artist and Doctor of Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki, has worked as an artist for more than 40 years.

Following her studies at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design (1972–75), she has held more than 300 solo exhibitions across 30 countries, including Japan, China, India, Latin America, the United States and numerous European countries.

Yli‑Mäyry works primarily with a palette knife. She applies paint in three different ways: as thin layers, bold incisions and by scraping painted surfaces to create a three-dimensional effect. The central theme of her paintings is humanity and the alienation of people from nature in the urban world.

The Soile Yli‑Mäyry exhibition is open from 2 September to 30 October 2026, Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 to 18:00.
