Dance artist and dance pedagogue Tero Saarinen is quoted in Hannele Jyrkkä’s book Seeker, as saying: “All people should have the opportunity, the right and curiosity to experience dance. The good feeling dancing produces affects the environment and also people around you”.
Irina Pått is known for handmade, ecologically-designed paper lamps. Recently, she has introduced a new material in her work – birch plywood.
Since she was a child, she has been engaged in classical ballet and modern dance, with dance pedagogues Kari Karnakoski, Anneli Wallasvaara and Mary Paischeff as teachers. Over the past two years, inspired by dance, Irina Pått has created 18 birch plywood reliefs and panels with LED light sources.
The works are designed for both public and private buildings, improving acoustics and bringing comfort and warmth to these spaces. The striped layers of sheets have been produced by a milling technology. The dominant feature of the works is the hollow form, reminiscent of giant Ice Age cauldrons that can be found in the Finnish countryside.
Dance is not one of the most common topics in Finnish design, so visualizing it has involved applying its own language of expression. “In this I have been helped by the works of my role models – Henri Matisse, Niki de Saint Phalle and Tapio Wirkkala, and Egyptian embossings that were created thousands of years ago.”
Wood is a valued material due to its ecological and recyclable properties. Eco-friendliness is considered one of the most important benefits for the use of wood in buildings – as a solution to indoor air problems, amenity (comfort), small carbon footprint, sound attenuation and healthiness. Products made of wood are made to last for generations.
“Plagues come and go, but art and design remain.”
The curator of the exhibition is Maria Ekman-Kolari.
