Paimio sanatorium was completed as a tuberculosis sanatorium in 1933, 90 years ago. The building was the breakthrough work of young architects Alvar and Aino Aalto. Already in the year of its completion, the sanatorium attracted widespread international attention. Over the years, the Paimio sanatorium has become one of the most significant landmarks of modern architecture. It is the concrete expression of the strong humane understanding of its creators in architecture and design.
Paimio sanatorium and Grafia both turn 90 this year. In honor of the anniversary, Paimio sanatorium foundation and Grafia ry invited visual communication professionals and students to interpret Aino and Alvar Aalto’s view of man’s relationship with his environment, in the form of a poster competition. The design of the waves was guided by a strong human perspective, and that idea was also sought in the competition.
The Human Perspective poster competition had plenty of quality entries and was international, which shows Alvar and Aino Aalto’s continuing strength as a source of inspiration and well-being trendsetters. Out of the 444 proposals in the competition, the complete set of 30 posters that can be seen was selected. In the competition, 3 main prizes and 3 honorable mentions were awarded. High-quality sales pieces have also been printed from these six posters.
