Additional information
The exhibition of the John Nurminen Foundation’s collections features old city maps of Helsinki from the 19th and 20th centuries. These historical City Maps offer the perfect opportunity to take a peek into the city’s multi-generational past, structure and changes. The City Maps of Helsinki also tell interesting stories about the social structure of the city, the growth of the city and the location of various activities in the urban space at different times. On display is, among other things, a map from 1838 by C.W. Gyldén, the author of Finland’s first urban atlas.
The goal of the John Nurminen Foundation, founded in 1992, is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. The foundation’s projects improve the condition of the Baltic Sea by reducing the load on the sea and environmental problems, such as eutrophication and loss of nature. The foundation’s mission is also to cherish, enliven and convey stories and cultural heritage related to the sea. Work is guided by results and effectiveness. The foundation’s operations are mainly financed by donations and grants. www.johnnurmisensaatio.fi
